Dep PM Plays Down Charter Row

The deputy prime minister pledges he will push for a similar stance on the charter rewrite among coalition parties in a bid to uphold the government's unity.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, also the Democrat secretary general, revealed the coalition partners' call for constitution amendment will be put on the agenda of the party's seminar in Krabi today and it willl reach a conclusion whether to support the move on Monday.

Suthep said he cannot ensure Democrat MPs and executives will vote in favor of the amendment but affirmed the decision will be based on a majority rule even though senior member of its advisory council, Banyat Bantadtan, has voiced opposition to the move.

Suthep said it is still too early to rule whether there will be a rift within the government if the Democrats turn down the demand of the coalition partners as his party has not made any decision yet.

The Democrat secretary general believes his role as the government's manager will help keep the stance of all coalition parties on the charter rewrite in the same direction to uphold stability within the administration.

Suthep said he has no objection to the move by de facto leader of the Chat Thai Pattana Party, Banharn Silpa-archa, to seek support from other coalition partners for the charter amendment as it is his original intention to bring the matter to the House.

He also played down Banharn's remark that he will join hands with the opposition Pheu Thai Party for the planned charter changes if the Democrat refuses to join the campaign, saying this will never happen.

Suthep also reiterated the push for the amendment will not lead to the collapse of the Democrat-led government.

Meanwhile, Bhum Jai Thai leader Chavarat Charnvirakul dismissed as groundless reports that his party will leave the government if the ruling Democrat Party allows its MPs to vote freely on the charter changes.

Chavarat insisted his party supports proposed changes in two articles of the charter and believes the ruling party will discuss the issue with coalition partners

He declined comment on the speculation that Banharn has asked Pheu Thai key member Somchai Wongsawat to participate in the charter rewrite effort.
