UPDATE : 4 February 2010
The Second Army Area commander steps up security measures to deal with rallies of Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship at military camps nationwide today.
He urges the red-shirts to act peacefully and insists the armed force is ready to protect the Privy Council as ordered by the army chief.
Concerning today's rallies planned by the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship, Second Army Area Commander Lieutenant General Weewalit Chornsamrit said the red-shirts have the right to stage rallies at military camps across
the country, but they should not turn to violence. He said the army force is ready and willing to heed the pro-Thaksin group's opinions, but he also urged the red-shirts to put the nation first and discouraged them from breaking the law. The lieutenant general went on to say he has already ordered military units in northeastern provinces to cope with the demonstrations, and he believes there will be no violence during the rallies, as the red-shirts only want to act symbolically. However, he stressed that police officers will immediately step in and the military force will probably join hands with police if violence does occur. As for a claim that paramilitary rangers will attend the rallies, the second army area commander said only a few rangers will be at the event, as most of them are well-disciplined and loyal to the kingdom. He added that he has been following an order to protect the Privy Council, as issued by Army Chief General Anupong Paochinda, and soldiers are keeping a close watch to find those who verbally attack the Privy Council members.
