M-67 grenade explosion at Gen Prem Tinsulanonda Statesman Foundation

BANGKOK, March 31 - A hand grenade, believed to be an M-67, was thrown into the compound of the Gen Prem Tinsulanonda Statesman Foundation on Tuesday night, damaging an electrical transformer and a car, but causing no casualtues, according to police.

Police and military rushed to inspect the scene after receiving the report of the incident at the foundation named in honour of Gen Prem, a former prime minister and current privy council president, at U-thong Nok Road at 8pm.

The explosion excavated a shallow depression 10cm deep and 30cm wide inside the compound, and shatteredwindows. One automobile was damaged, as was an electrical transformer.

The foundation is located near Gen Prem's official Si Sao Thewes residence. Gen Prem who also holds the title of Statesman was reportedly not at home at the time.

A detonator trigger mechanism was found at the scene. which led investigators to believe an M-67 genade was used.

Military police guarding the foundation told police that two persons on a motorcycle had hurled the grenade into the organisation's compound.

A car accompanied the motorcycle, according to witnesses.

Police were to review closed circuit television records of the area for more information on the assailants.

The incident was the latest of a series of almost daily explosions and gun attacks which intensified during the Red Shirt anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) protest in Bangkok demanding that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva dissolve the House and call a general election.
