Provinces Brace for Red-shirt Protests

UPDATE : 10 March 2010
Security forces are preparing plans to deal with red-shirt protests in the provinces as the day for the mass rally in Bangkok is drawing near.

Provincial Police Bureau 3 Commissioner Police Lieutenant General Dechawat Ramsompop has revealed security plans for the red-shirt rally in Nakhon Ratchasima on March 12-13.

About 150-200 security checkpoints have been set up in eight northeastern provinces.
Farm trucks, known as E-taen, will be banned from major roads since they are not permitted to run on highways. Meanwhile, in Pak Chong district, Nakhon Ratchasima, six squads of riot police will be in charge of peacekeeping. Military forces will be on standby for reinforcement. Security measures have been taken to deal with red-shirt elements who plan to gather in front of the vacation home of Privy Council President General Prem Tinsulanonda on March 12. I Love Udon Club President Kwanchai Sarakum said Udon Thani's red-shirt members will gather on March 11 before converging with others in Nakhon Ratchasima on March 12 to prepare to travel to the capital. At Baan Hua Dong School in Phrae province last night, pro-Thaksin elements staged a demonstration with ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra addressing his supporters through a satellite video link, which was also routed to Roi Et and Chiang Mai as well. Red-shirt supporters in Ubon Ratchathani province will travel to Si Sa Ket on March 12 and will then converge with fellow members in Nakhon Ratchasima. In Satun province, red-shirt activists are still raising funds to help pay transportation fares ahead of the March 12 convergence. Yesterday, Chonburi's provincial police practiced drills by simulating a blockade of Sukhumvit Road. Officials are in negotiations with local red-shirt leaders but if the talks fail, police still have a back-up plan.
