PAD Affirms Stance against Peace Move

The People's Alliance for Democracy insists the group disapproves of the prime minister's peace road map and warns there could be a rally to counter the red-shirt protests.

Core leader of the People's Alliance for Democracy, or PAD, Major General Chamlong Srimuang said after representatives of the group met with the prime minister yesterday that they still have the same stance against the prime minister's peace plan and snap election.

Major General Chamlong said there are several ways to end the red-shirt protests without the loss of lives as he suggested to the prime minister during the meeting. He said it is necessary to do so because the ongoing rally could lead to a civil war.

Major General Chamlong asked the Region 1 Army commander to declare martial law in Bangkok and nearby provinces to end the protests if the government fails to keep the situation under control.

He also commented that the people could come out to protect the country if no party takes serious action to address the crisis.

Another PAD leader Somsak Kosaisuk said the prime minister's peace offer aims to meet the demand of his ousted predecessor Thaksin Shinawatra and noted the premier took the opportunity of the protest situation to offer the plan which has been in place for a long time.

PAD leader Pipob Thongchai said Thaksin wants protesters to use arms in their political struggle against the government and stated the group's meeting with the premier revealed that a lot of firearms have been smuggled out of the protest site.

Pipob wondered why Army chief General Anupong Paochinda has not acted on the matter.

PAD spokesperson Panthep Puapongpan said the group is still persistent on the stance against the prime minister's road map as reconciliation with red-shirt leaders is not a proper way while holding an election in November will see state officials taking no action against violators of the law.
