Top Army Officer Backs Peace Plan
A key figure of the internal security agency has expressed full support for the government's reconciliation plan and revealed that there is no clarity for extension of the Emergency Decree enforcement.
Army chief-of-staff and secretary general of the Internal Security Operations Command, or ISOC, General Pirun Paewpolsong, said his agency is ready to support the government in proceeding with the national reconciliation plan. However, he commented that the restoration of unity would take time.
General Pirun went on to say that the planned amnesty for red-shirt protesters is still unclear and those who proposed the plan must listen to the majority of the society.
He then dismissed speculation that certain military divisions which are opposed to the current direction of the military took part in the red-shirt activities.
However, General Pirun admitted there is a political divide within the Army.
He also commented on the Emergency Decree enforcement saying it should be lifted as it could be reenforced should any unruly event take place.
The Center for the Resolution of Emergency Situation will make a decision whether to extend the Emergency Decree invocation before July 7, when the current enactment is set to expire.
