13-Year-Old Girl Takes Care of Blind Mother on Her Own

A thirteen-year-old girl faces hardship, taking care of her mother who became blind after receiving a cataract treatment, on her own.

Prapaporn Sawasud studies her last primary level at Ban Sok Don Kam Lai Kam Toey school in Amnat Charoen province.

She spends her lunch break going back to her home to take care of her blind mother and then going back to school.

Prapaporn's mother Nongkran said she received cataract treatment on her left eye at Srinakarin hospital in Khon Kaen province on October 2 last year.

After the surgery, she experienced unbearable burning in her eye and was admitted to the emergency ward. Her condition improved before she was allowed to go home.

However, the burning sensation returned and her eye condition deteriorated until she became blind in both eyes in December.

Her story is similar to those of seven cataract patients who became blind after they received botched treatments in Khon Kaen Central Hospital.

However, no conclusion has been reached as to whether Nongkran's predicament is a result of the hospital's mistake.

Prapaporn always wishes to see her mother to fully recover and to be able to see again. Seri Sriputtarin, a teacher at Ban Sok Don Kam Lai Kam Toey school, said Prapaporn is a diligent student. After she had missed class more often, Seri went to see her at her home to find out why she had been absent from school, and found out that the girl has been taking care of her blind mother on her own. Prapaporn's father has passed away. Prapaporn has had to miss school to accompany her mother to hospital for appointments with her doctor. Seri urged those who sympathize with the girl's plight to help her. So far no agency has tried to help Prapaporn and her mother.
