Red-shirt Group Warned against Airport Seizure

The deputy prime minister pledges to take action against the red-shirt group if it would trespass on state properties, including Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Deputy Prime Minister in charge of national security Suthep Thaugsuban urged the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship not to blockade Suvarnabhumi Airport as it will cause trouble to other people and tarnish the country's image.

Suthep, however, said authorities are preparing measures to keep the airport opearting as usual in the event of a rally since the matter is sensitive as reflected by yesterday's fall in the stock market over news about the DAAD's move.

The deputy prime minister cautioned the group against rallying at the entrance and exit of the airport or within its premises.

Suthep also sees no need to invoke the Internal Security Act to handle the DAAD rally, saying the government has prepared plans to control the situation if protesters would occupy government establishments and serious action will be taken in case they commit serious crimes.

The deputy prime minister insisted the government does not apply a double standard with the DAAD as the airport seizure case against the People's Alliance for Democracy did not originate during the term of the current Democrat-led government.

Suthep said the case against the PAD will be put forward for the Attorney General's consideration soon.

He also expressed disapproval against the DAAD gathering at the Royal Household Bureau to press for the progress concerning the petition seeking royal pardon for fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The deputy prime minister said the matter is still under the consideration of the Justice Ministry and he believes the DAAD will never reach its goal to change the way the state is governed as such a move is not approved by the people.
