Court approves arrest warrant for suspect in Defence Ministry grenade attack

BANGKOK, March 24  – Thailand's Criminal Court approved an arrest warrant for a man suspected of firing a rocket-propelled grenade outside the Defence Ministry.

Pol. Lt-Gen. Santan Chayanont, chief of Metropolitan Police Bureau showed an arrest warrant for Pol. L/Cpl Bundit Sitthichum, a former police officer at Wang Nam Yen police station in Sa Kaeo province.

Police filed charges against him for illegal possession of an unlicensed weapon, firing weapons in the city and using falsified government documents.

A bounty of Bt500,000 for tips leading to his arrest has been approved. According to the initial investigation, the suspect fled to a neighbouring country.

Police are gathering evidence to seek an arrest warrant for the other suspect. On Tuesday, they released sketches of two men suspected of involvement in the rocket-propelled grenade attack at the Ministry of Defence last Saturday.

A street sweeper was slightly wounded in the incident.

Drawn from descriptions given by witnesses, the sketches give visual impressions similar to the images recorded on the ministry's surveillance cameras.
