The Thai Muslim spiritual leader passed away of old age today at 94.
Thai Muslim spiritual leader Chularajmontri Sawas Sumalayasak died of old age today at the Bangkok Hospital.
Funeral rites will be held at Al Asna Mosque in Bangkok's Nong Chok district tomorrow at 1 p.m. with Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva attending. Soil to be used in the burial ceremony was bestowed by His Majesty the King.
Sawas was born on January 27, 1916, in Chachoengsao province. After graduating from high school, he studied Islam at several religious schools, including in Saudi Arabia's Mecca city, and was in the same classes as several Muslim leaders in Thailand.
He was also once elected Democrat MP for Bangkok.
Sawas was elected the 17th Muslim spiritual leader of Thailand when he was 80 years old.
